A Hot Afternoon and a Narrow Escape
Imagine a summer afternoon in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in Paradise, California. It is a beautiful, hot day in Central California. For a four-year-old boy, nap time seems like a waste of time when there is a whole world to explore. In a disobedient moment, the boy snuck out of his room, seeking adventure in his backyard. Without anyone knowing, he ended up taking refuge inside the family car, an old green Nash.
The Heat Trap
What started as an innocent game soon turned into a life-or-death situation. In California, the midday sun will turn the inside of a vehicle into an oven in a matter of minutes. Lulled by the heat that at the time felt pleasant, Dan lay down in the back seat and closed his eyes, beginning to doze off.
Every year, we hear tragic news about children who lose their lives in identical situations. However, for Dan, heaven had a different plan.
The Moment That Changed Everything. Miracle: A Narrow Escape
Just as sleep became dangerous, the afternoon silence was broken by a loud crack. Without a blow or any external cause, the car's rear window shattered into a thousand pieces, showering little Dan with safety-glass fragments. That noise and the falling glass woke him, allowing him to escape and return to the safety of his home. At the time, he thought somehow he had caused the window to break.
For almost 60 years, Dan kept this secret, not wanting to tell his mother and then mostly forgetting about it. Today, with the wisdom that years and faith bring, he recognizes that car windows are specifically designed not to break from the heat. It was pure and simple divine intervention. Reflections of Faith: God Has Always Known You
This story reminds us that the Lord's hand sustains us even when we don't know who He is. Dan was not yet a disciple, nor did he even know what faith meant, but God was already watching over him.
As we read in the Scriptures:
"For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways." — Psalm 91:11
This biblical promise literally manifested in that green car. And the Book of Mormon reinforces this truth about the constant protection of our Heavenly Father:
"...the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance." — 1 Nephi 1:20
